Student Scholarship
CSA T.H.K. Frederking Space Cryogenics Workshop Student Scholarship

The Cryogenic Society of America established this scholarship to help deserving students needing financial assistance to attend the Space Cryogenics Workshop (SCW). Historically two $500 stipends have been awarded to cover the cost of student registration and to defray some of the expenses of attending the workshop.
Applications for 2025 are available now. Please download the form and return via email to Megan Galeher at megan@cryogenicsociety.org. The deadline to apply is March 14, 2025.
The scholarship honors Professor Traugott Frederking, the first Fellow of the CSA, a professor at UCLA who regularly provided financial aid out of his own funds to support his students in attending the SCW and other conferences. Dr. Frederking was a professor emeritus of chemical engineering at UCLA and an expert in the field of cryogenics. After his death in 2001 he was remembered by his peers as a humble and modest man, hesitant to take credit for some of the most seminal work in cryogenics. Among the projects he worked on in his long career were the miniaturization of heat exchangers and the development of “lossless” operation for superconducting magnets.
Former CSA president Lou Salerno, former CSA board member Dr. Sidney Yuan (Frederking’s last graduate student) and Dorothea Frederking, the professor’s late widow, funded the scholarship.
